Rescue Animals Rock!
Take Home A Shelter Dog or Cat
Always adopt, never buy
It’s much less expensive to adopt than purchase from a breeder. Shelter animals who have been taken in by our rescue are up to date on vaccinations. We also pay for spay/neuter of all of the dogs before they are ready for adoption, which saves you time and expenses. All our dogs and cats live in foster homes, so we usually have a good idea of the pet’s disposition as well.
Greta
Gender: FemaleBreed: Plott hound mix
Age: 1 year
Weight: 50 pounds
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes
⇒ I’d like to start adoption process
Greta is a sweet girl who was rescued from a kill shelter just before she gave birth to 9 puppies in a foster home. She was a very good mom and has gentle and sweet demeanor, giving the sweetest hugs and kisses. She is house-trained and walks well on a leash. She rides well in the car, even learning to lie down when a car passes by! She is very smart and trainable and is not afraid of thunder storms. She has been fostered around children, dogs of all sizes and seems to do ok with cats. She is a happy girl who would bring lots of love into your home.
Greta’s Puppies
Alfie
Gender: MaleBreed: Black lab mix
Age: 7 years
Weight: 40 lbs
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: TBD
⇒ I’d like to start adoption process
Alfie was clearly once loved. He is house trained and knows sit, shake and gives the most gentle hugs. He insists on riding shotgun in the car. We aren’t sure how he ended up int he shelter or why he sat there for two months unclaimed. He’s very sweet with the other dogs in his foster home and is currently being bossed around by a small chiweenie. He doesn’t want any drama. He is crate trained and walks well on a leash and enjoys going for jogs with his foster mom. We aren’t sure if we would recommend a home with cats. His initial cat test went very well, but he has since lunged at cats in his foster home a few times so we are still assessing if kitties are safe around Alfie. This boy has a lot of love to give and tested Heartworm negative. We are treating some ear allergies but he’s otherwise in great health!
McGee
Gender: MaleBreed: Bombay (aspiring mini panther)
Age: 2-3 years
Weight: 12 pounds
Coat: Medium
Dog friendly: Love them!
Cat friendly: Love them!
⇒ I’d like to start adoption process

I’m an adorable mini panther and I need my forever humans to come save me! My name is McGee. I somehow ended up at the Lockhart shelter, and am grateful a human took me into foster care. I’m a 2-year-old Bombay, medium-haired cat, but I prefer mini panther. Foster dad says I’m the most talkative cat he’s ever had! That’s because I have a lot on mind and really like affection. He says my talking is called “trilling”. No idea what that means but ok! I trill. I am looking for a human who will play with me and help me channel some of my energy and affection. I love other cats too and even enjoy the 70-pound hound dog I’m living with. Not to sound like a perv, but I love it when my humans shower! I will stick my head in just to get a good misting. Foster dad says I’m rude for walking on counter tops, but I just like inserting myself into whatever you are doing. Ha. I really get stressed out in tiny spaces, so the lady from New Hope says I don’t have to go to any adoption events anymore as long as people share my story far and wide!
Recently Adopted
Lola
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: German Shepard
Age: 10 months
Weight: 48 lbs
Kid friendly: Yes (age 10 and up)
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

Lola is a sweet girl who is about 10 months old. She does well with both dogs and cats and is house and crate trained. She rides well in the car and walks well on a leash. She learns quickly but as a 10 month old, she still will require some training. As a mouthy, young dog, we recommend no small children.
Loreali
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: Shepard mix
Age: 1 year
Weight: 54 lbs
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

Loreali is an active but very sweet girl who gets along well with other dogs of all sizes and obeys the warnings of the cats of the house. She is very house trained and walks well on a leash, but sometimes interrupts the walk to give you a hug. Her foster has not found her to be destructive when left uncrated, but she does know how to open a front door if it’s not carefully locked. She is smart and athletic! She would love an active owner or family who will take her on hiking or camping adventures. She can easily jump a 4 foot fence, so a home with a tall privacy fence is most ideal or an owner committed to leashed walks to keep her from straying. While she is gentle, we would recommend no toddlers since she does jump to give hugs, but this behavior is easily trainable. She’s stunningly beautiful, smart, sweet, affectionate, playful, loving and active!
Carly
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: Cattle dog/Heeler mix
Age: 1 year
Weight: 35 lbs
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

Her foster says the one word that best describes Carly as “charming”. She’s a friendly, sensitive and “easy to live with” girl who is currently fostered with dogs of all sizes. She loves to play, is food motivated and loves water! She has interacted well with cats so far and we can further cat test for homes with kitties.
Chloe
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleAge: 7 years
Weight: 10 lbs
Kid friendly: yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

Chloe is a sweet girl who was terrified when her owners dumped her at the shelter. She wants nothing more than to snuggle in your arms or on your lap. She does well with both dogs and cats, but a large, dominant dog could be stressful for her. More info to come as we get to know this sweet girl.
Calli
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: Red Heeler mix
Age: 2-3 years
Weight: 40 pounds
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: TBD (we think yes but should cat test further)

Sweet Calli was one of 18 dogs abandoned on the property of a home (see also Peter’s story), and was brought to the Lockhart animal shelter. She is low to medium energy and adores all people, greeting everyone with cute paw slaps and a giant tail wag. She’s still learning about the world and can be timid on a leash, but she becomes more adventurous every day and gets along really well with all people and dogs. She loves observing nature and would be happiest in a home with a fenced-in backyard. Calli is a very sweet, gentle lady who needs a patient, loving owner who will grow her confidence and make her feel safe. She is truly an amazing dog with one of the spunkiest, cutest, funniest personalities her foster mom has ever seen. She will make you laugh and cry and melt your heart a million times over.
Chica
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: Chihuahua-Terrier mix
Age: 8-10 years
Weight: 10 pounds
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Tolerates
Cat friendly: Tolerates

My name is a Chica. My original owner had extended hospitalizations causing family members to bring me to a kill shelter. Thankfully, New Hope saved me. They found me a wonderful home with the nicest lady! But I’m heart broken because my owner passed away from cancer and I’m now back in foster care. I really loved my mom so this has been hard on me. I am starting to adjust to my new foster home. I really want a human to love and shower with affection. I a fostered with other dogs and have also been around cats. I will tolerate cats, but do sometimes chase them so your cats might not like me. I will want to sit right by your side on the couch or nuzzle up against your leg in bed. I’ve now lost two homes through no fault of my own and really need a home to call my own. My first adopter said I had accidents on the carpet but my current foster mom says I haven’t had any in the house. I am crate trained. Doctors say there is no reason to make me undergo surgery to remove my beauty mark as it’s not bothering me.
Lily
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: Chi mix
Age: 1 year
Weight: 17 lbs
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes

Gender: FemaleBreed: German Shepherd
Age: 4 years
Weight: 58 lbs

Vesper

Gender: FemaleBreed: Pit/Bulldog
Age: 6 months
Weight: 27 lbs
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: yes
Cat friendly yes (and bunnies!)

Vesper deserves to have her story told but please note that she has made a full recovery and is doing great! When she was just 7 weeks old and at 5lbs, Vesper was found left for dead in the trash on a blazing hot day. She had puncture wounds to her neck, a broken jaw and a cut that looks like it was made by a knife. We will never know for sure what happened to her, but she has made full recovery! This sweet girl is good with kids, dogs, cats and bunnies! She is submissive around other dogs she meets, just wanting to be friends with everyone she meets. She is loving, affectionate and playful.
Stella

Kid friendly: yes

Luna
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: Possible Terrier Mix
Age: 1 1/2 years
Weight: 41 lbs
Kid friendly: yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

Luna, this beautiful blonde, is the happiest and sweetest pup! At 41 pounds, she’s the perfect medium-sized dog that gets along with kids, dogs and cats. We estimate that she is 1 1/2 years old. Short soft coat is easy to take care of, no need for special groomers.
Luna will love taking walk with you or just snuggling next to you for reassurance.
Pookie
ADOPTED
Gender: FemaleBreed: Chi mix
Age: 13 weeks
Weight: 4 1/2 lbs
Kid friendly: yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

Pookie is a sweet little pup currently being fostered with a big dog who she loves! More info on Pookie soon as we get to know her. But we know she is a sweet pup who had a rough start in life. Someone found her on their porch and sprayed a water hose at her to scare her away before turning her into the shelter. All of the TLC she is receiving in foster care is making up for people who were less than kind in her early days.
Like most Chihuahuas, Pookie is highly intelligent and very active. Due to their size, people like to hold and carry their Chi’s, but lots of exercise, mind stimulating games, or a home with another dog where Pookie can release her energy is recommended.
Please note that According to American Kennel Club, this toy breed can live up to 20 years, so unlike many breeds, this little girl can make someone very happy for a very long time – a true life long friend.
Jordan
ADOPTED
Gender: MaleBreed: Lab mix
Age: 13 weeks (as of 8.22)
Weight: 12lbs
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

My name is Jordan and my siblings and I were abandoned along the side of the road. Luckily someone found us and brought us to the shelter. My siblings were adopted quickly, but I was left all alone until my New Hope foster mom scooped me up. I’m so happy to be in a house and I’m already getting the hang of potty training! Foster mom says I’m a smart, playful and sweet puppy that loves to be near my people. I love to play but I’m not a huge kisser. As far as puppies go, I’m relatively low maintenance. I sleeping my crate at night, but don’t like to be in it during the day. I’m curious about cats, but I know they are the boss and stay away! Foster mom says I look black in photos, but I’m a deep chocolate brown. I have a lot of facebook fans, but I’m not letting it go to my head.

Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Unknown

My name is Riley and I’m a 4 year old Newfoundland that weighs only 105 pounds. Foster moms says that’s tiny! I was forced to live outside in my prior life, but am adjusting beautifully to living in doors, walking around the house with my tail wagging and with my very first toy ever in my mouth. Sometimes I still pause at the door because I’m scared i’m not allowed to come inside, but my confidence is growing. Foster mom says I’ve had no accidents int he house and that I’m already crate trained. I love watching TV. It helps me feel relaxed. Other dogs also help me feel safe and confident, so do you have dogs in your home that can be my best friends? The rescue is working to clean up my eye and ear muck and I’m already feeling better. I will be neutered prior to adoption.

Charleston
ADOPTED
Gender: MaleBreed: Mixed Breed
Age: 5 months
Weight: 20 pounds
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

New Hope had organized a volunteer event at the Lockhart Animal shelter when one of our volunteers driving in for the event spotted poor Charleston in a ditch. When Charleston arrived at the shelter, we saw he had white gums indicating anemia and a bad limp on one of his rear legs. We were only there to volunteer that day but we could not leave him! We took him to the vet where they spotted a bb on the x-rays. His red blood cell count was only 11 when it should be a minimum of 40. We rushed him to the emergency vet for a blood transfusions and where they treated him for parasites causing the anemia. Charleston is now a happy, perky, playful puppy! The vet believes his leg will heal on its own and did not recommend surgery at this time. He’s a sweet, affectionate cuddly pup who would make a great addition to your home!

Here is what his dog boarding dad says about this amazing boy! “Just got back walking Eddie with eleven other dogs, by far Eddie was the best one. Walked right by my side, never pulled or went to mark anything- one of the best dogs I’ve ever walked. Whoever adopts this dog is going to get a great running Porsche at a Chevy prices.”
Eddie was adopted out as a puppy, and like many heartbreaking shelter stories, once the cute puppy phase ended he was no longer “a good fit”. He was turned in as a stray if you can believe. We found him at a Killeen shelter, a high kill shelter. We will do everything possible to find him the right forever home.

Princess
Adopted!
Gender: FemaleBreed: Mixed breed/Shepard
Age: 11 months
Weight: 36 pounds
Kid friendly: Yes
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly: Yes

My name is Princess. I’m a very loving Shepard mix who was going to be surrendered to a high-kill shelter. You see, my owner had gotten me as a “free puppy” but she learned that no dogs are truly “free”. As I got older, she realized she couldn’t afford basic vet care. And now that I’m all grown up and full of energy, she thought it best that I move on. I wasn’t a bad dog. It wasn’t my fault. I just wasn’t cute and small anymore. Well actually, I am still very cute!
But please don’t get a “free dog” if you can’t commit to us for our lifetime or afford our vet care. It hurts when we are discarded and puts our lives at risk. But I’m honestly grateful because now I have all my vaccines that protect me from disease and I’m spayed so that I won’t have puppies who might end up like me.
I love my foster home where I have lots of dogs to play with and can stretch my legs and run in a backyard. And I absolutely love kittens! Do you have a cat in your house I can play with? Because I’m still learning about the big world, I can be a little shy when I meet new people, but it only takes a few minutes for me to fall in love with you. If you adopt me, I’ll want to be by your side and be held in your lap. I’ll make you feel like the most important person in the world, because to me, you are.

Philip was surrendered by his owner (through no fault of his own) and although we may never understand why anyone would do that, we’re glad he’s with us so that we may find him his true furever family.
Philip was around small children and other dogs and he has done fabulously. He also does ok with cats. He would benefit from an active family or somewhere where he can exert his energy. We believe he would be great as an only dog in the house but he would also be great if he had another dog whom he could play with.
Philip has a herding streak so he is very eager to please, and although he currently needs firm handling and training, he will prove to be an amazing companion and a loyal friend for life.
