Canine Distemper: A Preventable Crisis

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Canine Distemper is a Preventable Crisis in Texas

New Hope Animal Rescue is raising awareness around the deadly distemper crisis in Texas. Distemper has always been an ongoing problem, but it continues to be on the rise! Distemper outbreaks at public shelters leads to mass euthanasia of the beautiful, sweet, adoptable dogs.  This is tragic when  distemper is 100% preventable with the DAPP [DHPP] vaccine. While our rescue saves distemper exposed dogs, we can't rescue our way out of this crisis, as countless dogs are euthanized at shelters during every outbreak, so we need your help spreading life-saving knowledge to friends, family, neighbors and colleagues.

Distemper Can Be In Your Own Backyard!

Well-meaning pet parents often do not understand how easily an unvaccinated dog can catch distemper, including from indirect contact with wildlife in their private backyard [urine, feces, saliva, placenta, and airborne droplets up to 10 feet!]! If your dogs are vaccinated with appropriate annual or triennial DAPP [or DHPP] boosters, the vaccines are very effective and your dog is extremely unlikely to contract distemper

Please read this a article for a better understanding of how distemper is spread, prevented and the tragic impact this virus is having on shelter dogs

Mamu Saved from a Shelter During Distemper Outbreak

When shelters have a confirmed distemper outbreak, any dogs within the vicinity of the sick dog[s] are often euthanized to avoid the spread of the virus. Mamu was almost killed because he had an upper respiratory infection, which is an early symptom of distemper. But when his amazing foster mom saw our plea for his life on social media - she drove directly to the shelter and saved his life!

Mamu's freedom ride from the shelter with his foster mom who adopted him!

Mamu entered our care 30 lbs under weight, with horrible skin issues and  broken teeth. We administered the distemper serum from Dr. Huddleston in Houston and thankfully, Mamu never showed any further symptoms. Once Mamu was healthy enough, our vet extracted 14 of his teeth! Any size donation to help us with Mamu's vet bills is greatly appreciated! Without support, we can't continue to save the most at-risk pets in need like Mamu.

Mamu was adopted by his foster moms who are the founders of  House of  True Colors. Their mission is to provide a safe, diverse and inclusive emergency care for children who have entered the Texas Foster Care System and to keep sibling groups together. Mamu will be spending a lot of time at House of True Colors and will do an excellent job helping foster children feel safe, accepted, loved and protected just like his moms did for him!
Dogs rely on humans to protect them, so stopping the spread of distemper starts with arming pet parents with knowledge and resources to keep their pets safe. We hope you will join us in our fight to raise awareness so dogs like Mamu are not killed.  Please consider donating to help us provide medical care to the distemper exposed and distemper positive dogs we rescue.

With a grateful heart,
