To ensure the well-being and proper development of our kittens, New Hope Animal Rescue has adopted the following policy:
We will not place an individual kitten under the age of six months into a home without another kitten or young cat.
This policy is designed to prevent behavioral issues and promote the health and happiness of our kittens. Here’s why adopting kittens in pairs is essential:
Avoiding Behavioral Problems
Our experience has shown that single kittens adopted into homes without other young cats often develop behavioral issues. These can include litter box problems and aggressive play biting. Kittens learn proper litter box habits and play behavior from each other. Without these lessons, they may transfer playful biting to their human companions, which can become painful and problematic as they grow.
Emotional Well-being
Two kittens keep each other company, providing mutual entertainment and companionship. A lonely cat can become neurotic, displaying destructive behavior or inappropriate urination to express their unhappiness. Adopting two kittens ensures they have a playmate, reducing the risk of such issues.
Social Development and Play Behavior
Kittens play together, sometimes quite roughly, learning from each other the limits of acceptable behavior. This natural play helps them develop social skills and bite inhibition. Without a feline companion, a kitten may not learn these important lessons, potentially leading to inappropriate play aggression as they grow.
Consider an Adult Cat
If you are unable to care for two kittens, we encourage you to consider adopting one of our wonderful adult cats. Many young mothers, barely more than kittens themselves, are playful and have good manners from being around other cats. Remember, the difference between a cat and a kitten is only a few months, but a well-adjusted cat can bring joy and companionship for twenty years or more.
Laying a good foundation in their early months is crucial, and the rewards of adopting in pairs or choosing an adult cat are tremendous. Thank you for considering our adoption policy and for providing a loving home to our animals.
