Our Spay/Neuter Policy: Why We Alter Puppies & Kittens Before Adoption
We spay and neuter early because it saves lives.
Our Policy
At New Hope Animal Rescue, every puppy and kitten is spayed or neutered before they leave our care. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) supports pediatric spay/neuter in dogs and cats at least 8-16 weeks of age to reduce the number of unwanted animals.
We spay and neuter puppies and kittens that are at least 12 weeks old and weigh at least 3 pounds.
Why rescues use early-age spay/neuter
- Prevents accidental litters: Ensures surgery happens before adoption to prevent future overpopulation.
- Reduces euthanasia: One of the most effective tools for reducing the number of animals entering shelters.
- Safe when done appropriately: Modern pediatric anesthesia is safe and effective with low complication rates.
- Faster recovery: Young animals often bounce back within hours and require less post-op medication.
- Healthier lives: Helps dogs and cats live longer and eliminates risks of certain cancers.
Pediatric spay/neuter ensures a healthy start for every rescue pet.
Did you know? Females spayed before their first heat are typically healthier and avoid life-threatening uterine infections like pyometra.
"This policy is not about convenience. We spay and neuter early because it reduces suffering and it saves lives."
